Today I have such a treat for you. Never in a million years would I have thought that I would be having Mindy Young of Indy Bloom Design featured here (eeeeeek!). To say I'm excited would be putting it lightly. And honestly, I shouldn't be surprised because that's just who Mindy is: someone who is so thoughtful and who takes the time to answer questions, even when she is up to her eyeballs in running her own business and courses.
I found Mindy on Instagram when she was still doing a tiny bit of photography and designing websites. She inspired me with her work then, and looking back now, I definitely feel lucky I got to watch as she uncovered something incredible. It was surface pattern design, or placing repeating patterns on fabric. To this day I still feel like Mindy was one of the OG modern surface pattern designers and trend starters (um hello watercolor sunflowers and everything whimsically gorgeous!), and it has been a treat to cheer for her on the sidelines! When I realized what she was doing, it lit a fire in me, and I realized that surface pattern design was what I was missing. At the time, I was struggling to figure out my art style and elevate it. Mindy was always so kind to respond to my questions and was never short or rude or ghosted me. I totally looked up to her as my mentor even if she didn't know it! hahaha. She never gate kept and was so open, and it made me realize that I could be that way too! Up until that point, I feel like SO MUCH of this industry was hush hush, which made it so hard to figure things out!
Basically, Mindy is incredible. She has accomplished SO MUCH in the past 8 years in this specific field. She's been a top seller on Spoonflower (plus had the top selling design in 2023!), she has created and run multiple courses to help fellow surface pattern designers, and recently designed an incredibly helpful planner for small business owners (and makers and designers-you totally need one of these!!) to help in their journey.
Hey there! I’m Mindy Young, owner and designer of Indy Bloom Design. I specialize in girly, floral designs that I sell on fabric and wallpaper. I specifically design for small business makers and d.i.y. creatives. Nothing makes me happier than to hear that my designs help small businesses succeed in selling their products! I'm a huge supporter of women supporting other women in their dreams and goals!
How did you fall into art?
I fell into art when I was pregnant with my 4th (Suprise) child. I was looking for wallpaper and cute baby clothes to put her in when she was in the hospital, and I couldn’t find anything in my style that I liked. So I thought, “I’ll just make something.” Once I did, I shared it on social media. My friends and family loved it and asked where they could buy my design. That’s when I googled how to design your own fabric and wallpaper and that is officially the day I became a fabric and wallpaper designer.
What’s your favorite medium to work in?
I LOVE working with watercolors, but as of late, I’m obsessing over acrylic painting.
Favorite tool?
I love designing anything girly or filled with flowers. Really, anything that can make others feel light and joy when they use or buy my designs.
Any fun projects you’re working on?
I recently have been working on a project with Disney and Copper Pearl, a baby company. It’s been really fun painting princesses! It’s a dream come true!
One of my favorite projects I’ve ever worked on was probably my first. Designing for my own daughter holds a special place in my heart.
What’s something you’d tell your younger self, that you wish you would’ve known sooner?
Something I’d tell my younger self, Don’t sweat the small stuff. Keep believing in yourself, and keep leaning into your own style and personality. It’s what will set you apart and don’t worry that you don’t have a “Degree,” your experience will take you further than a piece of paper will.
What do you love to do when you’re not creating art?
When I’m not creating art, I Love playing in nature. I love photography also and I’m obsessed with taking images in the “Golden Hour.” I guess I still create art even when I’m not painting. Can’t help myself… ha ha… I really love just being with my family and being a mom.
What’s your favorite social media platform?
My favorite social media platform is Instagram. But I have a love-hate relationship with it. Definitely have to have boundaries so I can stay creative.

Something so cool that Mindy did for me, back in...i think it was 2020...was to create a small group chat of women/surface pattern designers and add me to it. I was the smallest peon in the group for SURE but wow it made me feel so included and supported by these other amazing women doing BIG big things! I learned so so much from this group and realized the importance of building friendships and community during this time. Forever grateful to Mindy for that! She is always supporting, encouraging, and building up those around her.
I'm so happy to have been able to share a little bit about Mindy of Indy Bloom Design with you guys today! This is also where I soooo wish I had podcast equipment, because I'd for sure be chatting away with these ladies-there's just something fun and personal about live conversations right?! haha but okay I digress. Go show Mindy some love! And if you want to read about more of my art friends, you can find those HERE. xo
